Health Care

Since its foundation, Semmelweis University has paid special attention to the continued extension and development of its health care activities. As a result, the University has developed into the largest health care institution in Hungary.

The clinics and health care institutes of the University administer to patients in three major clinical blocks and 35 independent units: approximately 145,000 out-patients and 13,000 in-patients are attended to on a monthly average. These numbers show that the University alone satisfies about 6% of the health-care needs of the Hungarian population.

Semmelweis University provides chronic and rehabilitation health care service in its 26 clinics (departments). These contain a total of 2,166 beds.

Figures in the field of health care show a dynamic upward tendency. Between 2002 and 2006, activity volume increased by 10% annually and in 2006 the total number of patients administered to at institutes run by Semmelweis University amounted to 2 million.

In addition to direct patient care, Semmelweis University also contributes to the improvement of health awareness through the widespread dissemination of health information. Working for the preservation and improvement of its country’s most valuable natural resource - its health - the University indeed has a significant role in society.
