Health Care

Since its foundation, Semmelweis University has paid special attention to the continued development and expansion of its health care activities. As a result, the University has developed into Hungary’s  largest health care institution.

The clinical departments and health care institutes of the University administer to patients in three major clinical blocks and 35 independent units, where an average of 145,000 outpatients and 13,000 inpatients are attended to per month. Indeed, the University satisfies approximately six percent of the entire Hungarian population’s health care needs.

Semmelweis University provides chronic and rehabilitation health care service in its 26 clinics (departments). These contain a total of 2,166 beds.

Figures in the field of health care show a dynamic upward tendency. Between 2002 and 2006, the volume of activity increased by ten percent annually and, in 2006, the total number of patients administered to at institutes run by Semmelweis University amounted to two million.

In addition to direct patient care, Semmelweis University also contributes to the improvement of health awareness through the widespread dissemination of health information. Working for the preservation and improvement of its country’s most valuable natural resource - its health - the University indeed has a significant societal role.
