High-level South Korean delegation visits Semmelweis University

img_0891-copyDr. Ilhi Synn, President of South Korea’s Keimyung University, visited Semmelweis University on 13 July 2010. He was accompanied by a delegation, which included Dean of External Affairs Yongjin Park, and Dean of the College of Medicine Woo Hyun Park.

The visit’s main objective was to deepen relations between the two institutions, in accordance with the memorandum of understanding which had been signed in February of this year. In pursuit of this goal, the South Korean delegation met with Rector Tivadar Tulassay, Miklós Kellermayer (Vice-Rector for Education and International Relations), István Karádi (Dean of Medicine) and András Matolcsy (Director of the 1st Department of Pathology and Experimental Cancer Research).

At the meeting, President Ilhi Synn affirmed Keimyung University’s desire to develop a comprehensive cooperative program with Semmelweis University, which may include scientific research initiatives and exchange programs for faculty and students.

Proclaiming his own university’s interest in establishing stronger relations, Rector Tivadar Tulassay offered to invite two Keimyung research professors per year in order to promote scientific consultation and exchange.

As a highlight of their visit to Budapest, Miklós Réthelyi, Minister of National Resources received the South Korean guests for a courtesy call.

Intercultural Day 2010

The first ever intercultural day (initiated by students) at Semmelweis University was held in the NET building on 5 May 2010. Hosts of the day were the students themselves. At the stands students representing the various nationalities of Semmelweis University introduced characteristics of their cultures with some accompanying culinary delicacies. Exhibiting nations included Germany, Israel, Iran, Sweden, Canada and the United Kingdom. Vice-Rector Miklós Kellermayer and Co-Director of the Foreign Language Programme Erzsébet Ligeti addressed the audience while Director for International Relations Gyula Sümeghy showed the audience the intercultural stands with the help of the countries’ representatives one by one. Presentations of student unions, a delicious dinner made by Hungarian specialities and a folk dance group’s performance rounded out this first-of-a-kind evening.

Minister of Education and Culture awards Semmelweis University with the title of “Research Centre of Excellence”

Minister of Education and Culture Dr. István Hiller has awarded Semmelweis University with the title of Research Centre of Excellence.

This prestigious award comes with a grant of approx. EUR 11,000,000 and is a result of the long-lasting contribution of the institution to top-level research and quality education activities in the European area.

The Research Centre of Excellence title can be born until March 2013 by four other high-profile universities in Hungary as well.

Semmelweis International BioEntrepreneurship Program

A Semmelweis Innovations conducts a postgraduate program aimed at young professionals with a vision of entrepreneurship in the life science sector. The training is meant for those who want to learn the necessary skills in order exploit the knowledge they have created.
Basic requirements to enter the program are a minimum MSc level diploma and excellent communication skills in English.

Royal visitor at the 2nd Department of Paediatrics

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall visited the 2nd Department of Paediatrics of Semmelweis University on 19 March 2010. Her Royal Highness included the event on hers and Prince Charles’ three day long official visit to Hungary.

The Duchess of Cornwall got acquainted with the work of the Department as well as inaugurated the memorial plaque for the 125th anniversary of the foundation of the hospital. The plaque was made by the donation of the Robert Burns Foundation, which has been supporting the department for more than 10 years.
